Between Two Worlds: The Next Generation

Monday, June 13, at 9pm and 11pm on ThinkTV16

Between Two Worlds: The Next Generation, the conclusion of a two-part documentary series examining the lives of Vietnamese Americans and their families, focuses on the second generation. Their parents escaped Vietnam, eventually arriving in the Dayton area, with very little except their language and traditions. As their children assimilated into a new culture, what would be lost and what would be gained?

The first documentary in the series, Between Two Worlds: Dayton’s Vietnamese American Community premiered in April, 2015. The film followed the journey of Vietnamese Americans from the land of their birth to a new life in greater Dayton. The Next Generation introduces six second generation Vietnamese Americans who are faced with bridging the cultural gap between their parents’ principles, traditions and language and the desire to embrace American values.

The Next Generation participants include: Elizabeth Nguyen, a minister living in Boston who graduated from seminary at Harvard; Thy Vo, a robotics research engineer at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Research Laboratory; Thomas Nguyen, a registered nurse at Good Samaritan hospital; Maria Do, middle school student at Royalmont Academy; HaQuyen Pham, who does development and fundraising for a legal services non-profit and Hoang Duong, IT manager at Scotts Miracle-Gro in Columbus.

ThinkTV partnered with Wright State University’s Asian and Native American Center to produce the two documentaries.
