Sleeper Picks - February 2019
There are some underdog shows coming up in February! Here’s what our Chief Programming Officer, Jim Wiener, is looking forward to watching:
Saturdays starting February 2 at 9pm on ThinkTV16
A moody mystery series set against the backdrop of the gray Scottish Highlands. This is a continuing series, unlike other series that need only an episode or two to wrap everything in a nice bow.
Margaret: The Rebel Princess
Sundays, February 10 and 17, at 10pm on ThinkTV16 and CET
This is a two-part profile of Queen Elizabeth’s sister. Where Elizabeth was sedate to the point of inducing narcolepsy, Margaret was more the beautiful free spirit with a fashion sense. Her romance with Peter Townsend (no relation to the Who guitarist) was frowned upon, given he was a 39-year-old divorcee while she was just 23.
Margaret eventually married the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, and their social circle branched out well beyond the aristocracy to include a more Jet Set lifestyle of the ‘60’s. Had Austin Powers actually been a real life character of the time, he would have known them on a first name basis. A heavy drinker and smoker, Margaret died in 2002 at the age of 71.
Great Performances: Movies for Grownups Awards 2019
Friday, February 15, at 9pm on CET
Sunday, February 17, at 3pm on ThinkTV16
This has become a regular feature in AARP’s magazine. With so many movies geared towards teens and 20-somethings, it seems at least 75 percent of the features at the 20-plex involve super heroes and special effects. It may be one reason why features like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri are successful or Woody Allen can still crank out films like Blue Jasmine or Wonder Wheel. Adult filmgoers may just want something other than sword and sorcery or Marvel Comics characters or giant Transformers.
So with articles in their magazines on recommendation for a more sedate brand of “adult movies” has come their second Awards ceremony via Great Performances.
Charley Pride: American Masters
Friday, February 22, at 9pm on CET
Sunday, February 24, at 2pm on ThinkTV16
Monday, February 25, at 8pm on CET Arts
Profile of country music artist who was the biggest seller on the RCA label since Elvis. Pride was a standout singer, guitarist, and eventually business owner. He had over 50 top-10 hits on the Billboard country charts, and was one of only three African-Americans to be inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. On top of all those accomplishments, Pride was a pretty good pitcher in the minor leagues, including a stint in the Cincinnati Reds system, and eventually became a minority owner of the Texas Rangers. “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’” was his best known hit.
Independent Lens: People’s Republic of Desire
Monday, February 25, at 10pm on CET
Thursday, February 28, at 10pm on ThinkTV16
China now has a generation whose entire lives have been immersed in social media. Entrepreneurs can offer up cheap entertainment on the internet, knowing that their potential audience is a staggering potential audience.
So social media has now given us a world where people can earn well over $100,000 a month singing karaoke or hosting their own talk show. It may look and sound like Amateur Hour, but if enough people subscribe, the amateurs can make more than stars who headline Vegas.
